What I’m doing now
Living in Darwin
For the next year I’m spending my days in my hometown of Darwin in the Northern Territory of Australia. It’s really a lovely place to live and is very open and relaxed while the rest of the world is in apparent chaos. The entire 1,349,129 km² Northern Territory has had twenty nine confirmed cases of COVID-19 and zero deaths as of June 20th 2020. That’s not to say it’s without it’s problems, while everyone is healthy and free, the local economy is heavily driven by mining, trade, and tourism which have cratered and the population has started shrinking as a slow economic train wreck unfolds.
(Re)Defining my business
So much to say here, expect a long blog post soon.
Dreaming of travel
Ahhh 2020, you know how it is. 2021 I have me eye on you!
Learning about ActivityPub and Mastodon
Social media is broken. It’s impossible for one company, with one set of rules, ideas, and beliefs, to meet the needs of everyone around the world. There are a lot of different people out there in the world (which is great). What if anyone could build their own little social media network with rules which meet their community’s needs. Then imagine if all those networks had the option of connecting with each other, through a universal standard.
Sounds neat? Well the Standard exists and it’s called ActivityPub. The prettiest implementation of ActivityPub is Mastodon (join) which looks and works a lot like Twitter. If you check it out, be sure to follow me at https://mastodon.social/@jonathanhaslett and say hello.
Riding my motorcycle
It’s a 2016 Kawasaki Ninja 300 in Black/Red. It gets a bit warm riding around Darwin but overall I like it a lot. I wish I had more motorcycle friends to go on social group rides with.
Playing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
A slow burn that I keep coming back to again and again as I quest through a satisfying story and an enormous world. I have spend so many hours over the last year playing this game that it rightly deserves a place on my now page.
Playing Magic: The Gathering
Magic is one of my favorite hobbies. Most Wednesday nights I host a tournament at my office for my friends. As a collectible card game it constantly bumps into my minimalist philosophies and world traveling digital nomad dreams. To keep my collection size in check, I play a format called Modern. It’s loads of fun and allows me to play without constantly purchase cards from the newest expansions. In previous years I’ve flown thousands of kilometers to attend large events but it doesn’t look like that’s happening anytime soon 😥.
I have a reminder set to check in and update this page once per month. So check back later if your want to see what I’m up to then.
